This module deals with the integration of natural and cultural heritage in land-use planning.Land-use planning pertains to aspects of landscape, societal values and governance; this is the point of reference for this module, along with the ‘floating’ attributions surrounding these core aspects.

There is a scarcity of projects in Spanish heritage management which focus on real integration of cultural and natural heritage, however there are some interesting exceptions. This case study is focused on one of the most remarkable examples developed in Spain: Vías Verdes, or ‘Greenways’.

The Manifattura Urbana Association case study is an example of participatory restoration and managment of cultural heritage based on community involvement, through a process of integrated vocational training, creation of identity and engagement of volunteers.

The Involving stakeholders in urban planning strategy – Castle Hill in Grudziądz, Poland case study presents how heritage may be managed and saved thanks to cooperation of various stakeholders. Castle Hill in Grudziądz is a place where might have been rebuilt and reconstructed due to the engagement of local community. The case study stresses the importance of cooperation between the authorities, general public and scientists in the sustainable development of heritage.

The goal of the Biocultural diversity in Lisbon's urban planning case study is to show how integrated natural and cultural heritages are present in Lisbon’s urban planning, and how stakeholders are involved in the planning process.

The Landscape planning instruments: the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Forgotten Landscapes project case study provides an example of how a successful UK-specific landscape planning instrument can be a key component of the spatial planning process at all levels. The landscape planning instrument presented is the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) Landscape Partnership Scheme (LPS), an allocation of finances and resources dedicated to landscape-oriented developments such as the Forgotten Landscapes Project (FLP) in Blaenavon, Wales.
