E-learning content in content repositories
Form of e-learning content
In order to support material reusability, the Repository must be structured appropriately. One possible approach is the organisation of content as an e-learning course. An e-learning course possesses the following characteristics:
- it contains multimedia and interactive elements that make course content delivery more attractive and that facilitate effective learning,
- has a hierarchical structure based on the division of content into independent components such as learning objects,
- can be imported into any e-learning platform by the fact that it is formed as SCORM packages.
Multimedia and interactive elements increase the effectiveness of online learning. They should always be used to expand core content rather than to simply make the material more attractive. The introduction of elements like this into e-learning courses facilitates the visualisation of dynamic processes, phenomena, or the illustration of interdependencies between processes that are discussed in the text. Elements of this type may also be used to build various types of quizzes (multiple choice questions, true/false questions, drag and drop elements, etc) allowing assessment of students' progress through the online training. These same kinds of elements can be used to build self-assessment components that don’t send results to a trainer, but that allow the learner to interact with the assessment environment. Despite the significant role of multimedia and interactive elements in the distance learning process, their presence, or lack of, does not affect the processing of the course in the Content Repository.
